Shogi in Sweden

1996 Martin Danerud returned to Sweden after spending a few years in Japan. During his stay in Japan he had learned to play the game Shogi achieving the grade 1 Dan. Back in Sweden he tried to promote shogi, starting mainly in Goteborg. The Swedish Shogi Federation was founded at the 20th of March 1997 in a meeting at the city library in Goteborg. During this year players went thru a rating procedure consisting of solving tsume-problems and playing handicap games to get a staring grade. The same year a match was played against Norway which ended with 21-3 in favour of Sweden. The Swedish Shogi Federation started to publish a Swedish shogi magazine with four issues a year with Martin Danerud as the editor. The magazine “Shogi pa Svenska” has been published in 47 issues. Since 2007 is Therese Jernberg the editor for this magazine.

At eastern 1998 shogi professionals Teruichi Aono, visited Sweden. After playing around 20 handicap games simultaneously he politely said that he was impressed by the playing strength of the Swedes.

In april 1998 the first FESA-rated “real” tournament was played in Sweden – Goteborg Open. This tournament was followed up by a Stockholm Open later that year.

The same year shogi professional Makuto Chuza visited Sweden, playing simultaneously games and also participating in a shogi promoting activity in a shopping hall.

1998 was the first shogi forum played where Carl Johan Nilsson participated as the Swedish representative.

The first Swedish championships in shogi was played 1999 and has been played every year since. Karl Johan Moberg became the first Swedish champion.

In 2001 shogi professionals Teruichi Aono, Yuji Maeda and Fusako Ajiki visited Sweden to promote shogi.

At the beginning of the new millennium there where shogi clubs in a handful of cities in Sweden. It was therefore decided to have a Swedish Championships for club teams. The first championship was held 2002 with Goteborg as a winner and followed by Stockholm. Goteborg has up to 2007 won all the six played team championships.

In the second Shogi Forum 2002 the Swedish team consisting of Peter Kanenko, Carl Johan Nilsson and Nils Carlsson managed to get to the semi-finals where they where knocked out by China.

The European Shogi Championships was played in the beautiful archipelago of Goteborg 2003 in which 22 Swedes participated. Thore Angqvist made it to the finals which is the best achievement in the European Shogi Championships so far.

Today there exist three formal shogi clubs in Sweden - in Trollhattan, in Vastervik and in Goteborg who all arrange regular shogi meetings. There are yearly open shogi tournaments held in each of these places. There are also regular shogi meetings in Stockholm.

The Swedish Shogi Association which still is lead by Martin Danerud consisted of around 80 members 2007. Of these can around 40 be counted as regular tournament players.
